Tallahassee Bowling Association Inducts Marvin Overby into their Hall of Fame at Final Meeting
On May 21st, at the Tallahassee Bowling Association’s final meeting, the Association inducted Marvin Overby into its Hall of Fame for his promotion of the sport.
Marvin Overby was involved with bowling in the Tallahassee area since 1965. As a director and coach for the FSU Bowling Program, he devoted much of his time and effort to the success of that program. He took the Men’s team to a 2nd place finish in 2001 and the Women’s team to a fourth place finish in 2002 and 2nd place in 2003. All were wonderful achievements for Tallahassee bowling community and Florida State University.
Marvin’s selection was directly related to his promotion of bowling in the Tallahassee area. He developed leagues that were filled with both community and FSU bowlers in the hope of keeping the competition keen for his FSU bowlers, but also as an outreach program to keep his bowlers interacting with the community. He also allowed adult and youth leagues from commercial houses to bowl temporarily at FSU’s Crenshaw Lanes when circumstances required the commercial bowling centers to close for various reasons. He always did whatever he could to allow Crenshaw Lanes at FSU to host TBA events.
Marvin’s greatest contribution to the Tallahassee bowling community was his initiation of sport bowling leagues and tournaments to Tallahassee. He was truly the father of sport bowling in Tallahassee, again making this unique experience available to community bowlers as well as highly encouraging his FSU teams to participate. The league has now run five years and the tournament four years. A tribute to his vision and his promotion of all bowling, but particularly sport bowling.
Marvin Overby sadly passed away in July of 2004 and is being honored posthumously.
